Every morning Laxmi is led down to the nearby river to take a bath and be scrubbed, and this is where I met her. As she is a working temple elephant, she is decorated with temple symbols on her head. Her job is to be just outside the temple and extend her trunk out to people for money. Everyone knows not to give less than 10 Rupees ….it would not be accepted. The money is taken up by her trunk and passed over to her handler. She then raises her trunk and very gently touches the head of the giver as a blessing.
